10  Structure & Formalia

Your thesis is an academic piece of work. There are many rules for how academic works should look like. Even though some of these may be arbitrary they actually serve the purpose of making different works comparable. Following these formalia is thus extremely important.

10.1 Length and formatting

Requirement
Minimum length 8,000 words
Maximum length 9,000 words (10% margin allowed = up to 9,900)
Word count excludes Title page, abstract, references, tables, appendices, and (for qualitative research) citations from data
Line spacing 1.5
Font 12pt Times New Roman
Pages (approx.) 22–28
Word count location State on title page
NoteLength is about quality, not padding

If your project is genuinely complex and cannot be reported within 9,000 words, discuss this with me. However, being overly long without justification may negatively affect your grade. Less-important material can usually be moved to an appendix.

10.2 Required structure

Your thesis must follow this structure. The page counts below are guidelines, not strict requirements.

# Section Guideline
0 Title page —
1 Table of contents —
2 Abstract / Summary ~0.5 page
3 Introduction 1–2 pages
4 Theory 6–8 pages
5 Method 2–3 pages
6 Results 3–4 pages (qualitative: 6–8 pages)
7 Conclusion and Discussion 4–5 pages
8 Reference list ≥ 30 references
9 Statement about Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technology usage After references; not in word count
10 Appendices —

Depending on your research design, you may deviate from this structure — but always consult me first.

10.2.1 Title page

The title page should include at minimum:

  • Title of your thesis
  • Your name and student number
  • Course name and code (S_MTcw)
  • Supervisor’s name
  • Date of submission
  • Word count of the main text
  • VU Amsterdam / Faculty of Social Sciences / Department of Communication Science

10.2.2 Abstract

The abstract (approximately half a page) is written last but appears first. It concisely describes:

  • The reason for the study and the research question/hypotheses
  • The method
  • The key results
  • The main conclusion

10.2.3 Appendices

At minimum, include:

  • Your questionnaire and/or stimulus materials
  • Your codebook (for content analysis)
  • The RERC ethical self-check PDF

Variable names in the appendices should match exactly those used in your Method and Results sections.

10.3 Formatting (APA)

All text, tables, figures, the title page, table of contents, abstract, and reference list must follow APA 7th edition guidelines. See Citing & Referencing for details and apastyle.apa.org for the full style guide.

Key formatting rules:

  • Statistical symbols are italicized: M, SD, F, t, p, r, N, n
  • All numbers rounded to two decimal places (except p < .001)
  • No leading zero on p values and correlations: write p = .03, not p = 0.03
  • Report exact p values: p = .03, except when p < .001
  • Spaces after = and < signs
  • Tables and figures must include all necessary information and labels

10.4 AI disclosure statement

All theses must include a Statement about Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technology usage after the reference list (not counted in the word count). See Using AI Tools for what this statement must contain.

10.5 Submission

Submit your final thesis:

  1. On Canvas (where it will be checked for plagiarism)
  2. By email to both me and the second reviewer (check with me whether a paper version is also required)
  3. Ensure I have access to your final data file and syntax via the shared surfdrive folder

After receiving a passing grade, you must also upload your thesis to the UBVU thesis database — this is a prerequisite for receiving your diploma. See Assessment & Graduation for details.
